The focus is on making recycling simple, consistent and ensuring manufacturers and consumers take more responsibility. The proposal aims to tackle inconsistency ensuring all council collections are all the same and having universal labelling on packaging.

Focus is also being put on producers to be responsible for disposing the items they manufacture such from drink cartons, electrical goods and cars. If their products are harder to reuse, repair or recycle they will pay higher fees. Products need to be designed to have a longer lifespan and increase the levels of repaire and re-use.

All councils are compelled to offer separate collections for food waste, however that will go for consultation. Additionally it is proposed that council stop charging for garden waste as it ends up in black bins and goes to landfill and contributes to greenhouse gases.

How will it affect you?

  • You may be getting a food caddy soon but will not be forced to use it. This may mean your black bin will be emptied less.
  • There will be a deposit on drinks containers such as coffee cups however you get the money back if you recycle it.
  • Take care who you get to dispose your goods as they could be electronically tagged.
  • Your goods may last longer or more easily repaired.
